-
A phenomenom in which a patient exhibits increased blood pressure in a clinical setting but not at home.
-
It is believed that this is a response to the anxiety people experience during a doctor's visit, however, many patients with white coat hypertension do not exhibit signs of anxiety, and the high blood pressure is often not accompanied by tachycardia.
-
This condition is seen in 10-40% of patients with borderline hypertension.
White Coat Hypertension (Syndrome)
What is it?
Management
-
White coat hypertension is identified by a patient who is keeping track of their blood pressure at home.
-
Blood pressure values higher than those listed above may indicate that the patient has hypertension and not simply white coat hypertension.
-
Medical consultation may be required to determine the level at which treatment can safely be provided.
