  • A phenomenom in which a patient exhibits increased blood pressure in a clinical setting but not at home.

  • It is believed that this is a response to the anxiety people experience during a doctor's visit, however, many patients with white coat hypertension do not exhibit signs of anxiety, and the high blood pressure is often not accompanied by tachycardia.

  • This condition is seen in 10-40% of patients with borderline hypertension.

 Management

  • White coat hypertension is identified by a patient who is keeping track of their blood pressure at home.

  • Blood pressure values higher than those listed above may indicate that the patient has hypertension and not simply white coat hypertension.

  • Medical consultation may be required to determine the level at which treatment can safely be provided.
