Infections of coronary stents are rare but have a high mortality and morbidity.
-
It takes 72 hours to 30 days after stent placement for the neointima to fully cover the stent and become completely endothelialized.
-
During this time should coronary stent patients have antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent infection of the stent due to bacteremia caused by dental treatment?
Coronary Stent Infections
Concern
Is antibiotic prophylaxis recommended?
-
The American Heart Association has concluded that no convincing evidence suggests that microorganisms associated with dental procedurescause infection of non-valvular vascular devices at any time after implantation.
-
Infections of these devices most often are due to staphylococci, gram-negative bacteria or other micro-organisms associated with the implantation or resulting from wound or other active infections.
